Hada Labo has launched the Hada Labo SHA (Super Hyaluronic Acid) Hydrating Light Lotion, its newest product in Singapore recently. The Hydrating Light Lotion is a variant of its existing Super Hyaluronic Acid Lotion (which I've reviewed before), with a twist: this version of the product is formulated for oily skin.

The new Hada Labo SHA Hydrating Light Lotion

To be honest, I've found all the Hada Labo lotions I've used to be pretty light and oil-less to begin with, so I couldn't imagine coming out with a special version for oily skin - it seemed to me that even oily skinned-people (like myself) should be able to use the original version. But, I guess if there is demand, then there will be supply! And voila, now we have the SHA Hydrating Light Lotion, and I'm glad to be able to bring you a review!

As you might expect, the Hydrating Light Lotion doesn't differ too much from the original. The product doesn't pretend that it is radically different, and the product does live up to expectations in many ways - same plastic cylinder packaging, same flip top, same clear product with a watery consistency. All these are excellent traits retained from the original.

Hada Labo Hydrating Light Lotion: A lighter version for oily skins

When I tried out the Hada Labo Hydrating Light Lotion, I found that it was much like the original, in terms of feel and usage. It is also a clear liquid that sinks easily and quickly into skin, and just like the original, it also delivers the same benefits, mainly that of hydration and moisture. I was quite satisfied with this product, although to me, it wasn't very much different from the original - just a slight tweak for oily skins. However, I did receive comments from a couple of readers that this Light version of the Lotion worked much better for them than the original when I reviewed the original SHA Lotion, so your preference for one or the other will probably depend on the whims of your skin. For me, I never found the original very sticky or unwearable, so I feel like I don't really have a preference between the two.

And of course, my experience with the Hada Labo Hydrating Light Lotion is borne out by the ingredients list. As you might expect, the product is formulated to be slightly lighter, with the primary ingredients being Water, Dipropylene Glycol (a humectant that's also a solvent for organic ingredients), and Glycerin (another humectant), all of which are excellent, tried-and-tested choices for a hydrating but lightweight moisturizer. Of course, the Hyaluronic Acid part is in there too (Sodium Hyaluronate, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate).

This formulation isn't very different from the original, which pretty much featured the same ingredients (water, glycerin, as well as the three hyaluronic acid variants), with only slight changes in some of the skin conditioning agents (for example, the use of Butylene Glycol instead of Dipropylene Glycol, and PPG-10 Methyl Glucose Ether instead of PPG-20 Methyl Glucose Ether). All in all, if you liked the original but felt that you would prefer something less sticky and lighter for oilier skins, you won't be disappointed by this. It's equally as good as the original.

So when should you use the SHA Hydrating Light Lotion, and when should you prefer the original? Since both products are equally good at delivering hydration and moisture to your skin, it will really depend on your own skintype. For me, although I have oily skin, I found that I didn't really have a preference between the two, but I did have readers who had a marked preference for the SHA Hydrating Light Lotion. At the end of the day, I don't think you can go wrong with either - both have similar formulations, and similar skin-feel to me, and I've tried and liked both. I generally like Hada Labo products - I feel like they live up to the hype, and generally have low skin irritation potential. The value-for-money size (you really get quite a large amount of product) is also a great selling point, too. Bonus: If you're located in Singapore, you can redeem a free Hada Labo Hydrating Lotion sample from the Sample Store website right now.

  1. I have the original lotion one and I have oily skin but so far I have no problem with it :D The amount of oil on my face throughout the day is still acceptable, and I don't find any irritation as well!
